The main theme for this year was Competing Globally Opportunities Ahead . A number of eminent speakers from different walks of life, was the big attraction to the event. The Inaugural address by Dr. Sam Pitroda, Advisor to the Prime Minister, over the internet through video conferencing was the unique feature of this year s convention.

The inevitability and imperatives of competing globally are very well espoused by renowned Management Guru Peter Drucker in his Management Challenges for the 21st Century . All institutions have to make global competitiveness a strategic goal. No institution, whether a business, a university or a hospital, can hope to survive, let alone to succeed, unless it measures up to the standards set by the leaders in its field, any place in the world. This observation is proving to be more and more relavant in the emerging global scenario characterized by disappearing or substantially diminishing barriers to cross-border business, thanks to the increasing liberalization across the world. Globalisation, for better or worse, is all but irreversible and it has changed the way the world does business. The challenges for the individuals and businesses, therefore, is to learn how to live with it, manage it, and take advantage of the benefits it offers.

Competing globally means not only competing abroad but also fighting the global competition in the domestic turf: a market in the domestic market often has to compete with the financial, operational, marketing, managerial and other prowess of the MNCs.

Opportunities are indeed infinite and exciting in the emerging global scenario. India Inc. of course has been proving its mettle in fighting foreign competition in the home turf and in foraying in to the foreign markets, both by green-field route and takeovers some of which are stunning. The road ahead, however, is often very long, crowded and full of challenges.

A Brief Background of the Theme for this years Convention.

The world economy, which, after a bright period of impressive growth and reasonable price stability, was terrified by devastating food and energy crises, has been suddenly crippled by the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. And the present crisis is much more widespread and deep and its shockwaves are more rampant and avalanching as the world economy today is much more integrated and intricately intertwined than in the past.

The global economic crisis has been a much needed wakeup call to corporate India to further rejuvenate itself and gear up to face unexpected adversities. The greatest message of the crisis is that a firm should anticipate the possibility of severely adverse environment emerging suddenly at any time that could create havoc if not well prepared in advance to meet it. It points to the need for building alternative scenarios and having plans and strategies in place for them. Also important is contingency planning.

However, the impact of the current global economic crisis on the Indian economy and Indian business has been much less severe than in respect of most other countries. In fact, India Inc. was moving well forward, piggybacking on the impressive Indian and global economic growth, eliminating/minimising weaknesses, consolidating the strengths, fighting the threats and exploiting the opportunities.

Inaugural Session 3rd February 2011, Thursday

The convention commenced with the Inaugural session on Thursday, 3rd February 2011, at 6:30 pm. His address was not just informative and inspiring but also carried some profound statements on how business and industry in India is to chart its own course towards global competitiveness. He stressed on the importance of how, we as a nation have to take on the global competition head on through increased stress on the manufacturing sector, through technology innovation leading to invention and through international corporate governance standards. Through extensive use of new technologies like Information Technology we need to reach the benefits of our economic and social programmes to the end customers in the remote villages and only then can we move towards inclusive growth and sustainable development through social justice.

Inauguration of the 30th Annual Management Convention 2011

This was followed by the Key Note Address by Dr. Vinod Thomas, Director General & Sr. Vice President, IEG, World Bank.
